Updating Project Devices/Tasks Using Export and Import

Using SiteOwl’s export/import feature is the most efficient way to update large numbers of Project Devices and Tasks. This approach supports the following:
  1. Modifying the value of certain fields. While not all fields can be updated using import, the majority can be. Refer to the Rules for Editing Project Devices Using Import page for details on which fields can be modified.
  2. Archiving and unarchiving Devices and Tasks in bulk. Note that when a Primary Device is archived, all of its Secondary Device are also archived. Also, when a Primary Device is unarchived, its Secondary Devices are not unarchived. They must be unarchived individually. And, if a Secondary Device is unarchived, its Primary Device is automatically unarchived. Step 1: Export a CSV file of Devices and Information to Update

From the Project Card, click the Device Count link. This will take you to the Project Devices screen.


Click the Configure Columns link to select which columns of information are included.



Check the box next to each type of information you want to include and edit. For this example, the Serial Number, IP Address, and MAC Address columns are selected. When done, click the Update button.


The Device list is displayed with the columns you selected.


Step 2: Export your Devices in a CSV File

Now that all of the columns you want to update are displayed, click the Export button to download the Device list.



Step 3: Update your Devices CSV File

When you open the downloaded CSV in Excel, you will see the all columns that you want to edit.



Enter the information that you want to add or change, and then save your changes.

IMPORTANT: Before editing an export file, take a moment to review the Rules for Editing Device/Task Export DataUnderstanding these rules will help you avoid errors during the import process. 

Step 4: Import your Updated Devices CSV File

Return to Project Devices screen and click the Import button.


Click the Import button to upload your updated file.



Select the file that you edited and click Open.
If all of your edits meet the import requirements, you’ll see a message like the one below. If there are errors, you’ll see information about how to fix the issues. Click the Import Devices button to continue.


After the import is completed, you’ll see the following message. Click the Close button.



When you review the Project Devices list, you’ll see that your changes have been made.
